Game Recap November 6, 2010

"Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get." This famous quote from the movie Forest Gump is the best way to describe the annual series between the Greater Spokane League and the Big Nine. The only way to figure it out is to sit back and watch the games.

Tonight pitted the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups and their star running back, Bishop Sankey against the Richland Bombers and their vaunted running back Jake McKinney. The general concensus coming out of Spokane  was that the Bombers should just hand the game ball to Bishop and throw him a parade. Unfortunately for the Bullpups, they weren't banking on the Richland Bomber defense and the Bombers walked away with a 21-7 victory and a date with the Ferris Saxons in Spokane next weekend.

The game started fast when Jake McKinney bolted for 20 yards on the first carry of the game but the pace soon slowed, settling in to a battle of punters Neither side was able to budge the other and the first quarter ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Bullpups were the first to flinch. Cole Hornbeck's punt  was muffed by Sankey and recovered by BK Robinson on the Prep 19 yard line. Colter Quick then hit a wide-open Jarod Turner for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Once again the Bomber defense forced the Bullpups to punt. B.K.Robinson took the reins for an injured McKinney and the Bombers rushed down the field in five plays. B.K. finished the job with a beautiful 36 yard touchdown run. The extra point was missed and momentarily took me to a dark place but either way, the Bombers entered halftime with a surprising 13-0 lead.

Final score displayed on the scoreboard at Fran Rish Stadium after the Richland Bombers defeated the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 21-7.

The Bullpups came to life early in the second half. Taking a  chance on fourth and 1 at the Prep 43, Bishop Sankey had the coming out party everyone had anticipated. Finding a rare seam in the Bomber defense, Bishop ran away for 57 yards and a touchdown. The extra point was good and Gonzaga Prep was in the game at 13-7.

Jake McKinney, recovered from his previous shoulder injury, took whatever wind held up the Bullpup sails with a 33 yard run to start the drive. Colter Quick then made the play of the game. Not able to find an open receiver, Colter scrambled for 23 yards and turned a 3rd and 13 into a first and ten. McKinney scored on a 6 yard run a few plays later. Quick passed to Keenan Carrato for the 2-point conversion and the Bombers were firmly in the lead at 21-7.

The Bombers saved their best game for when they needed it most. The offense was smooth and steady but  the defense was nothing short of amazing. The Bombers held Bishop Sankey to 150 yards on 34 carries, well below his season average. Without any other viable options, the Bullpups couldn't get unhinged.

The Bombers now travel to Spokane to take on 3rd ranked and undefeated Ferris whose Saxons totally dismantled the Wenatchee Panthers 48-3. Ferris is good on both sides of the ball so next week's game should be very exciting, indeed. For those of you going to the game it is at 8:00PM at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. This will be the second game of a doubleheader at the stadium so don't be surprised if it starts a little late.Make sure you dress warmly, bring a couple extra blankets and a big thermos of hot chocolate because it's going to be cold.

Go Bombers!
