Game Recap October 11, 2018
Last year's blowout win against the Southridge Suns saw the Richland Bombers score 63 points in the first half, 42 of those in the second quarter. This year's matchup was nearly the same, with eight touchdowns scored in the first half, and 35 points in the first quarter, as Richland added one to the Suns' loss column for the sixth straight year in a 55-7 drubbing.
Despite rain before and during the game, which left the well-used grass at Fran Rish soft and slippery, the scoring barrage nearly started on the kickoff when Cody Sanderson ran up the middle and was tripped up by the last Southridge man at mid-field. It only took two more plays to get on the board, as Dhaunye Guice took a 35 yarder in for the first of his four touchdowns in the game. Quarterback Josh Fonner threw a long one to Ben Fewel and ran two in on his own, including a 64 yard stunner (who knew?), and Drew Daves reeled in a 42 yard exclamation point near the end of the first half. All of this happened with team captain Ryan Kriskovich sitting out to rest an aggravated injury, linebacker Camron Ball ineligible due to last week's ejection, and Sanderson relegated to defense only for reasons unknown. The Bomber defense provided good field position for the offense all night and held the Suns offense to low yields in general. Southridge followed a good game plan, attempting to take advantage of Richland's blitzes and man coverage with quick and accurate passes, and it paid of once in the first quarter when a receiver got loose for big yards, followed by a run to the end zone. Congratulations to the Suns for their second touchdown of the season, scored on a legitimately good Bomber defense.
The Bomber offensive line once again provided plenty of options for Guice, bulldozing a path in every direction, and at the same time giving Fonner plenty of time to scan his receivers and roll out when necessary. The defensive line went through what had to be a full rotation, especially in the second half, holding Southridge scoreless after the first quarter. Sanderson had a big night on defense as well, knocking down plenty of passes, snagging an interception, and helping stuff the run. Fewel had an interception as well, along with Matt Robinson's pick to effectively end the game. Fonner may have had the most entertaining play of the game though. Attempting a screen pass to the right, the wet ball slipped out early and made a short arc right above the QB's head. Snatching it out of the air, he made a run for it and made good headway before being brought down.
A win against Southridge is always good, but a win against Kamiakin is better. Sitting at the top of the MCC standings (Kamiakin beat Hanford, Hanford beat Chiawana), the 4-2 Braves will visit Fran Rish and try to solidify their position. The Bombers will try to extend their winning streak to five games this season as well as making it four in a row against Kamiakin. The Braves last defeated the Bombers in 2014 at Lampson Stadium, and last won at Fran Rish in 2009. This game is never a gimme (last year was close to it though, a 33-0 humiliation) and both teams are sure to bring their best as the multi-sport rivalry continues to heat up.
