Game Recap September 11, 2010
RICHLAND -- Look's like baseball's "summer of the no-hitter" is turning into Richland football's "fall of the shutout."
The Bombers defense pitched its second straight shutout and gave the offense a short field to work with as three first-half turnovers turned into points during a 38-0 rout of the Hanford Falcons on Friday night in a nonleague contest at Fran Rish Stadium.
On a night when the Richland offense had plenty to crow about -- Jake McKinney ran for 112 yards and a score and Gage Reynolds reached the end zone twice more as the Bombers rolled up 241 yards on the ground -- it was the defensive effort that stood out.
Three times in the first half, the offense started at or inside the Hanford 25.
"Give all the credit to the defensive staff," said Richland head coach Mike Neidhold. "Greg Sevigny, Kevin Norris and Jason DiStefano had a great plan this week and the kids pulled it off."
The Bombers (2-0) had five sacks, recovered a pair of fumbles and picked off two passes. They limited Hanford to a scant 32 yards in the first half, taking the run-first Falcons out of their game before it was even a contest.
Midway through the second quarter, standout running back Cameron Wagar had only five touches -- one of those a heads-up catch of a deflected pass -- and finished with 41 yards on 13 carries.
"I love it," said Richland senior Joey White, who had two of those sacks and also anchored the offensive line at center. "It's definitely in our heads we have those two shutouts."
Another nice boost for the Bombers was the passing game. Overall, first-year junior quarterback Colter Quick finished 6-for-15 for 59 yards -- hardly Drew Brees-like. But he threw for two first downs and a touchdown on Richland's opening drive and completed five of his first eight attempts.
It's a big improvement from last week's 9-for-21 performance with two interceptions, and enough to keep defenses honest.
"It felt a lot smoother this week," said Quick, whose first varsity scoring pass went six yards to Cole Hornbeck. "We felt really confident in the passing game."
For Hanford, there won't be a lot of highlights come Monday's video sessions. The Falcons managed just 109 total yards, and quarterback Riley Shintaffer completed just three of his 11 throws, nearly all of them coming under heavy defensive pressure.
"The athleticism of their front seven caused some problems for our kids," said Hanford coach Rob Oram, whose young team couldn't have picked a deeper pool to jump into head first.
The Falcons, who lost 46-14 to Chiawana in their opener, will have to mitigate their performance against the fact that they played what are expected to be the toughest two CBBN 4A teams.
"We knew we would be severely challenged the first two weeks," Oram added. "We'll have to look at the film and see if we've improved."
As noted previously, I wasn't able to go to the game tonight but I just found out the score and the Richland Bombers prevailed over the Hanford Falcons 38-0.
I will update this post as I get more information.
Update:The Tri-City Herald has a writeup of the game at Sports Tri-Cities.
