Game Recap September 4, 2010
The Richland Bombers took care of business in a sloppily played non-conference game against cross-river rivals, the Pasco Bulldogs. The 21-0 score is mighty nice to look at from a distance but the closer you get, the harder it is not to see the little hairs growing out of the warts.
The Bombers came out running behind senior Jake McKinney and really didn't stop until Jake scored on a 22 yard run. Kevin Garza nailed the extra point and with 8:27 remaining in the first quarter it was 7-0 Bombers.
Then the general weirdness set it. Pasco tried out a new formation for punting and it needs a little work. Instead of the traditional punt set with the punter and a bouncer in the backfield, Pasco set up in normal play formation and then go into a funky 2 back set. One of the two would get the snap and then perform one of three options: punt; run; or pass. This is the part that is going to require some work. Even the punting was a strange, with DeVaunte Lamb employing a modified rugby pooch than a traditional punt. The first one was beautiful and landed 42 yards away. Two through four would be what the kids call a "fail," though Lamb was successful on the run option in the second quarter. I'm not saying it's bad, just that it needs some spit and polish.
At the end of the first quarter the Bombers received the ball on an unsucessful Bulldog fourth and six. Colter Quick got the ball moving with a nice 20 yard pass to Cole Hornbeck. That put the ball on the Richland 41 yard line. Quick then decided to prove his last name and scampered 58 yards until he ran out of steam and was tackled on the one yard line. Jake McKinney was then given the honors and performed a nice swan dive into the endzone for a 14-0 lead.
Though Pasco was putting up a great effort all game, the Bulldogs just couldn't get it together when they needed. Each team was feeling particularly generous as Richland had two interceptions and three fumbles and Pasco had one interception and two lost fumbles of their own. I think both teams are happy this was a non-league game.
The final score followed muffed punt return by the Bulldogs that gave the Bombers and extended drive in the fourth quarter. Gage Reynolds and BK Robinson had some nice plays with Reynolds capping the drive on a 3 yard run.
The game stars go to Jake McKinney who ran 16 times for 136 yards and the Bomber defense for pitching a shutout. It's hard to gauge how the Bombers are going to be this year so, in my humble opinion, I think you need to step out on a Friday night and catch some Bomber Football.
Next week features the "Battle for Richland" when the Bomber fans travel to the West side of the stadium and watch Richland take on the cross-town, home-standing Hanford Falcons. The fact that Hanford had a rough outing against Chiawana shouldn't really matter because the Falcons are always tough in this game. My suggestion is to come early and get ready for some very exciting football.
