Game Recap October 11, 2008
The Richland Bombers won their fifth game in a row with a dominating performance against the Kennewick Lions.
The Bombers started off slowly, taking a 6-0 lead into the second quarter thanks to two Jacob Moreno 34 yard field goals. The second quarter, though, was anything but slow. Jamison Rowe tried to get the Bombers going with a 67 yard punt return for a touchdown, but a holding penalty negated the run. Unfortunately for Kennewick, this would be their last break of the game.
Instead, three minutes later, Rowe got his first touchdown on a 26 yard pass from Hayden Hilty. Kennewick had a good opportunity to keep the score close. Drew Loftus broke a run and had 65 yards of daylight, but a Bomber linemen spoiled the party and stripped the ball. An alert Paul Sisk pounce on the ball and the threat was over. Richland scored three minutes later when Brett Jacobs hauled in another Hayden Hilty touchdown pass for a 20-0 lead.
Not content with a 20 point lead, the Bombers went for the kill. Jacob Moreno executed the perfect onside kick, rolling the ball up the back of a Kennewick player and into the waiting hands of Nick Lee. First and 10 Bombers on the Lion 42. A few plays later, Jake McKinney trotted in for a touchdown from the Kennewick 5.
On the next kickoff, Moreno whiffed on the kick and the ball Weebled two yards. Four minutes into the second quarter and Kennewick finally had their first sniff in Bomber territory. Then the wheels came off. Jamison Rowe, apparently miffed at missing out on his first quarter punt return, picked off a Trent Brown pass and boogied through a pack of Lions in route to a 70 yard touchdown. Bombers 34, Lions 0 at halftime.
The second half of the game was downright boring, compared to the excitement of the second quarter. The only highlights included Kennewick's first first down of the game, three minutes into the second half. Jacob McKinney rounded out the Bombers scoring with a 22 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The fourth quarter belonged to the Junior Varsity and gave the sophomores and juniors a chance to get some Friday Night game action. The Lions did get on the board early in the fourth quarter as the Lions Nate Woods scampered 19 yards for a touchdown, thus providing the final score of Richland 41, Kennewick 7.
At this point in the season, the Bombers are firing on all cylinders and have a commanding two game lead in the Big Nine Cascade Division. It's not exactly Slurpees and Yahtzee from here on out, though. The Bombers next two opponents, Kamiakin and Walla Walla are both 3-2 in the conference and would like nothing more than to make that a three-way tie for the conference lead. Kamiakin is next and apparently are starting to come back from a raft of injuries. Next weeks game at Lampson Field is for all of the division marbles as far as Richland is concerned. Let's pack the Lamp and help the boys finish this thing off early! See you next week!
Go Bombers!
