Cadets

Game 8: Richland 55, Eisenhower 21
2010 GAME 8: Friday October 22, 2010

Game Recap October 23, 2010
The Richland Bombers needed a win to clinch a home game in the playoff portion of the GSL / Big Nine Crossover series. They got a win, and then some, with a 55-21 carpet bombing of the Eisenhower Cadets in Yakima.
The Bombers started off very fast. Starting at their own 35 yard line and went 65 yards in four plays, powered by a Jake McKinney 32 yard run for the first touchdown. 10:13 left in the first quarter and 6-0 Richland. After Ike was ineffective in it's first series, the Bombers again received the ball on their own 42. Six plays later, Colter Quick rolled in from 1 yard out for the touchdown. BK Robinson added an extra point run for a 14-0 lead with 8:55 left in the first quarter.
Eisenhower then showed some life. Trevon Harris broke through the line on the second play of the series and ran untouched for a 76 yard touchdown. Richland then immediately turned the ball over wtih a fumble on the kickoff. Ike had perfect field position on the Bomber 43 and four plays later were sitting first down and five yards to go for a tie.
Unfortunately for the Cadets, Elijah Gardaya had other ideas for his evening when he intercepted Jason Easter's swing pass and ran helter skelter for a 95 yard touchdown. This was no ordinary return, though, as Easter was hot on his trail for the entire way. Gardaya twice shook off Easter's advances and scored giving the Bombers a 21-7 lead with 4 minutes left in the first quarter.
After going three and out on their next possession, the Cadets were bitten by a short 25 yard punt that Gage Reynolds returned 15 yards to the Ike 35 yard line. Jake McKinney took the ball on the first play and bolted to the one yard line. Taking the ball again, Jake finished the job with a 1-yard touchdown. Fifty seconds left in the first quarter and the score was Richland 28, Eisenhower 7. I was winded just watching from the stands.
As the second quarter started it looked to settle down a bit, but not for long. On the Bombers first posession the snap to punter Cole Hornbeck was low. The Cadets pounced on him and took over on downs at the Richland 5 yard line. Harris then ran the ball in from four yards out and it looked like the Cadets were ready to crawl back into the game at 28-14.
Instead of their quick strike offense they employed in the first quarter, the Bombers embarked on a new strategy. Starting on their own 5 yard line after getting pinned down by and Eisenhower punt, the Richland offense plowed the field. Twelve plays, 95yards and over five minutes on the clock until McKinney scored his third touchdown of the first half on a five yard run. At halftime, the Bombers were leading 34-14. The game seemed well in hand at this point but the ferocity with which Harris had scored his touchdown in the first quarter made the game seem a lot closer than it really was.
The second half started off rather innocently with each team sharing punts over the first three possessions. The Bombers then got the ball on their own 39 and quickly went on the move scoring on a six-play drive that was highlighted by a 46 yard pass from Colter Quick to Gage Reynolds. Elijah Gardaya got the honors, though, and scampered in off a reverse from 9 yards away and with 3:06 left in the third quarter it finally seemed like the Bombers had the breathing room they needed.
Gage Reynolds was not so convinced, though. On the first play of the Cadets next drive, Reynolds stole another pass and ran away with a 45 yard interception return. Richland 48, Eisenhower 14.
The Cadets were still hoping against hope with Trevon Harris breaking away again, just three plays later on a 60 yard touchdown run. Harris would end the night with all three Cadet touchdowns and 207 yards rushing. Very impressive but just not enough on this night.
BK Robinson filled out the scorecard on the next drive, running the entire 48 yards on four plays finishing the scoring on a six-yard run. Richland 55, Eisenhower 21.
This was a great win for the Bombers. Eisenhower is a good team and Richland pretty much did what they wanted. Over the last three weeks the Bomber offense has found a great rhythm and have done a great job of getting an even number of yards and plays through both the run and the passing game. This will hopefully help them as the playoffs approach. There are two teams in the Greater Spokane League, though, that will test them on both sides of the ball. The 8-0 Ferris Saxons don't give up points, and the 7-1 Gonzaga Bullpups have been ruining the carpet on offense.
But I get ahead of myself. Crash Davis would tell you to take it one game at a time and the good Lord willin', we'll play another good game next Friday night at Lion's Field in Moses Lake. This will be the Bomber's first game on the new turf and the Chiefs will be ready for a good game.
So, pack the long johns and join us next week!
Go Bombers!!
