Can the Richland Bombers handle competition? Tonight, that question was answered loud and clear in a 31-21 win over the visiting Davis Pirates. It wasn't easy. These Davis Pirates are for real and the Bombers had to work all four quarters to gain the victory.

The game started off quickly. Richland marched 61 yeards on 9 plays behind Jake McKinney's running and Colter Quick struck first with a two yard touchdown pass to Ellijah Gardaya. Davis, in turn, used the arm of quarterback Deion Wright taking advantage of a Bomber pass interference penalty and three long passes to tie the game at 7-7, hitting David Trimble for an 11-yard score. Not to be outdone, the Bombers came back and took the lead on a BK Robinson 30 yard run. Stopped cold at the line of scrimmage, BK pushed the flow to the outside and found a clear path to the endzone and a 14-7 Richland lead.

The offensive track meet settled down in the second quarter after the Bombers forced a punt. After going three and out, the Bombers punted from their own 24 but the ball was muffed and revovered by Richland for a 40 yard gain. A few plays later Jake McKinney scored on a 1 yard run and a 21-7 lead. The Bombers defense got the Pirates to punt again and with great field position at the Davis 42 it looked like the game was about to turn into a rout. Nobody told Davis. On the first play from scrimmage Carlos Perea-Vijarro picked off a Colter Quick pass and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown and a new life. Unfortunately, the offense couldn't keep up the momentum and Richland was able to get a little breathing room when Kevin Garza kicked a 35 yard field goal with four seconds left in the half, for a 24-14 score.

While the first half was a track meet, the second half was a cross-country run. After swapping punts, the Pirates found the ability to run eating large chunks of turf and found themselves with a first down at the five and a chance to do some damage. Richland had other ideas, though, and stopped the Pirates cold.

Davis must have put a good scare into the offense because they decided the only way to put the game out of reach was to keep the ball. The Bombers embarked on a 13 play drive that consumed 95 yards featured 7 first downs, and ended on a Jake McKinney one yard run. More importantly, the drive chewed up almost seven minutes.

The Pirates didn't give up. This Davis team is well-coached and has some excellent skill players. The Pirates took only 1:41 and four plays to strike back when Cooper Kupp caught a 14 yard pass from Wright to make the score Richland 31, Davis 21. Davis' last shot at victory was dashed when the onside kick didn't travel the required ten yards and the Bombers were able to seal the deal and run out the clock.

The Bombers are now 4-0 for the first time since 1990. No, it's true, I looked it up. Whether they can go 5-0 is up to Steve Graff and the Chiawana Riverhawks who are also 4-0 and just manhandled the Walla Walla Blue Devils 37-0. Intrigued?
