Game Recap November 12, 2016

TRI-CITY HERALD: SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1963
BY ART GATTS

WENATCHEE — Fran Rish doesn't believe in fancy football deception. His Richland Bombers remained undefeated Friday night by the simple formula of hitting the tackles 38 per cent of the time for a 19-7 victory over the Wenatchee Panthers.

Richland ran with the ball 48 times that counted and 28 of those plays were directed at tackle, notably behind the blocking of Terry Jones and Allen Jorgenson.

Except for a fumble, that figure would have been 29.

IT WASN'T UNTIL the second half that the Bombers really got rolling, defensively or offensively. They made 13 of their points, limited Wenatchee to a net gain of 13 yards in the final two quarters and more than doubled their yardage total of the first half.

The first quarter was scoreless with two great runs enlivening the point dullness. Lyle Bland, a 135-pound sophomore speedster, returned the first Richland punt 37 yards to the Bomber 37, where the last defender, Ray Stein, got him. On fourth down at the R-31, Mike Lucas passed and Stein intercepted it near the W-25. He got back to the W-34, 41 yards, before being stopped.

Richland made it to the 13, lost the ball after a penalty.

The Panthers started a TD drive in the first quarter at their 33. It took 16 plays to score. Richland came right back on an 11-play drive for 57 yards and was behind only a conversion at the half.

A FUMBLE STOPPED a third-quarter drive for the Bombers, but a recovery of a bobble on the next play game the ball right back to them and they went ahead to stay.

All of Wenatchee's gains the first tally were on the ground, the longest 13 yards. Jim Radloff plowed over from the one to score and Carl O'Donnell left-footed the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 5:20 to go.

There were 48 seconds left when Richland scored. Of the 57 yards, 18 came on four cracks at left tackle, 21 on four at right. Terry Waltman carried the last three to the left for three, five, and one yards. A Mike Byrd pass to Waltman for 22 yards set it up.

Fred Milton took a step a little too long and O'Donnell blocked the point-after kick to keep the Wenatchee lead, 7-6.

BUT IT WAS DIFFERENT in the second half. Richland stalled at the W-32 the first series, a bad pitchout losing six yards and the ball. But the Panthers had the same trouble on the first play, the lateral squirting away and Waltman recovering on the 34, almost where Richland had started the time before.

Waltman made a great run on the first play, going down the sidelines for what looked like a TD, but he was ruled out-of-bounds at the eight. Stein hit right tackle twice for the needed yards and the 12-7 lead with 1:46 remaining. His buck for the extra-point was stopped.

Richland took over on the W-49 via a punt to start the fourth quarter and used nine plays to score again. Byrd was the biggest instrument with a 12-yard pass to Bruce Brown and a 14-yard gain. He stepped back to thrown on the latter, was rushed hard by O'Donnell and took off loose-leggedly around the end. From the two, a keeper by Byrd (off tackle, of course) got the touchdown.

With 7:13 left, Waltman plunged for the conversion to make it 19-7.

THE RICHLAND RESERVES almost scored in the final seconds on a 37-yard burst by Randy Simmons, five by Dick Brunnelle, eight by Bruce Kasey. A penalty and the clock prevented any further advance.

John Crowder (with 11 tackles), Jones (eight) and Harold Surplus (seven) led the Richland defenders, Stein adding six stops. Elvin Worley had 12 for the losers.

It was the second win for Richland, the second loss by Wenatchee, sandwiched around a victory, to a Tri-City team.
